First Lady Saves the Day!
During the War of 1812, British troops were advancing on Washington D.C. The threat became so serious that the White House was evacuated in the middle of the night. In the panic and confusion, it was Dolley Madison, wife of President James Madison, who insisted on taking Gilbert Stuart's priceless portrait of George Washington with them as well as other important papers. Later that night, the British troops reached the White House and set the building ablaze. Many early treasures were lost in the fire that night, but because of Dolley’s quick thinking, this priceless portrait of American's first president was saved.
