State, Local Eemergency Managers and Teams in Preseason Training and Outreach as the 2008 Season Begins June 1

TALLAHASSEE – State emergency and local managers are busy across the state this May planning, training, and hosting outreach events to get their teams and all Floridians ready for the 2008 hurricane season which begins June 1. Over the next month there are numerous local expos and preparedness events that are open to the public.

Florida Officials Announce Chip Wilson as Statewide Disability Coordinator

State officials from Emergency Management, Agency for Persons with Disabilities, and the Department of Health jointly announced the selection of Chip Wilson of Jacksonville to serve as the Statewide Disability Coordinator for Emergency Management on Monday, November 5, at the State EOC. “With Chip, Floridians now have a full-time advocate looking out for the unique disaster-related needs of persons with disabilities,” said Governor Charlie Crist.

Over 100 local and county emergency management officials met this week at the State Emergency Operations Center for the second session of the 2007 Current Issues in Emergency Management Seminars, hosted by the Division of Emergency Management (DEM).

FLORIDA PUBLIC SAFETY INTEROPERABLE COMMUNICATIONS GRANT

The Florida Public Safety Interoperable Communications Grant Portal is now available at http://www.psicfl.com.

The Public Safety Interoperable Communications Grant Program will provide funding to States and Territories to enable and enhance public safety agencies’ interoperable communications capabilities. The PSIC Grant Program is a one-time grant opportunity to enhance interoperable capabilities with respect to voice, data, and/or video and encourage the use of innovative cost- and spectrum-efficient technology solutions.

Public Assistance Team Receives 2007 Davis Productivity Award

Emergency Management’s Gary Freerksen and Bill Owens have received a 2007 Prudential Financial Davis Productivity Award for their efforts to streamline the Public Assistance process and the development of www.FloridaPA.org. The duo will also split a $500 dollar award provided by Florida TaxWatch.  The annual Davis Productivity Awards honor the excellent work and creativity of State employees who have truly made a difference by developing more efficient products, cost saving systems, and services that benefit the residents of Florida.  The team will be recognized at the annual awards ceremony in June.
