National Flood Insurance Program Workshops and Seminars

The following workshops are available to be presented by the State Assistance Office for the National Flood Insurance Program to local governments, residents, homeowners and civil groups as well as building trade groups (architects, builders, contractors and developers, engineers, Realtors, surveyors etc....). These workshops are on an as requested basis and are free of charge.


MANAGING DEVELOPMENT THROUGH THE NATIONAL FLOOD INSURANCE PROGRAM

Course Number: BCAI 94- 0014- 008 CLIB 04G0365- 11

A. Course Description:

This training course is designed to provide the building officials with the essential information regarding codes and standards relating to the development in the identified special flood hazard areas.

B. Classroom Hours: Four

C. Instructors:

D. Overall Goal of the Course:

All new construction and substantial improvements located in the flood plains must meet the minimum National Flood Insurance Program regulations which are based on a 100-year flood event. It is crucial that, all building officials who are involved with regulating development in the floodplains have a sound understanding about the National Flood Insurance Program and its regulations.

RETROFITTING AND FLOOD MITIGATION

A. Course Description:

This training course is designed to provide the building officials with a comprehensive strategy which includes mitigation techniques and tools with a focus on existing flood-prone structures. This course also delivers essential information regarding codes and standards relating to the development in the identified special flood hazard areas.

B. Classroom Hours: Four

C. Instructor: Leroy Thompson, Department of Community Affairs

D. Overall Goal of the Course:

All new construction and substantial improvements located in the flood plains must meet the minimum National Flood Insurance Program regulations which are based on a 100-year flood event. However, there are lots of structures which were built before the community started enforcing the floodplain construction standards. These structures are not in compliance and pose a threat to the life and property. This course will make building officials aware of the techniques available to bring these structures up to current floodplain construction standards.
