The dangers of a flood do not end when flood waters recede. Do
not go into any area that has been flooded without being authorized to do so by proper
autorities. If your home has suffered any damage during a flood, contact your insurance
company as soon as possible. Monitor your local television and radio stations for
information on how to obtain help.
If flood waters have entered your home, do not enter; it may not
be safe. Use only battery powered light sources. If doors must be forced open due to
swelling or warping, try entering a window.
Check with local autorities before using any water as it may be
contaminated. For the same reason, have wells pumped and tested before personal use such
as drinking or hygiene. Any food touched by flood waters should not be consumed.
Have all electrical equipment and wiring checked by a licensed
electrician before restoring power. If you have gas connections into the home, ensure the
utility company checks for leaks before restoring any service.
Extra caution must be used when pumping out water in basements or
below ground rooms. If the surrounding ground around the home is still waterlogged,
emptying these areas too quickly may cause the walls to collapse and/or ceilings and upper
floors to buckle.
Another caution to be aware of is animal hazards. Snakes, rodents
or other small animals, or even fire ants and scorpions, could have entered the home
looking for shelter from the water.
