for Tropical Cyclones

A Guide to NWS Products issued for Hurricanes and Tropical Storms

Atlantic Hurricane Season
(June 1st thru November 30th)
   
Tropical Outlook Issued four times daily describing the state of the tropics. Issued by:
NHC
Tropical Cyclone Advisories Issued as needed for Atlantic tropical cyclones. The suite of advisories includes discussion, forecast, and probabilities. Issued by:
NHC
36 Hours before Landfall    
Hurricane Watch Issued when a hurricane or hurricane conditions poses a possible threat to coastal counties, generally within 36 hrs. Issued by:
NHC
Tropical Storm Watch Issued when tropical storm, or tropical storm conditions pose a threat to coastal counties, generally within 36 hrs. Issued by:
NHC
Hurricane Local Statement (HLS) Issued to the public by local National Weather Service offices, to give more specific information about how a tropical storm or hurricane will affect a particular NWS office's county warning area (CWA).

Examples of information that may be included in the HLS: Onset time of tropical storm/hurricane force winds, amount of rainfall expected, storm surge values, evacuation orders, road closures, shelters, and any other information that would help to reduce the loss of life and property in both inland and coastal counties.

A new HLS is released to the public approximately one hour after each hurricane/tropical storm advisory is sent by the National Hurricane Center in Miami, FL.

Hurricane Warning Issued when a hurricane or hurricane conditions poses a threat to coastal counties, generally within 24 hrs. Issued by:

Tropical Storm Warning Issued when tropical storm, or tropical storm conditions pose a threat to coastal counties, generally within 24 hrs. Issued by:

Inland High Wind Watch
for hurricane force winds
Issued for inland counties that sustained wind of 74 mph or greater associated with a hurricane are anticipated beyond the coastal areas though the actual occurrence, timing and location are still uncertain. Issued by:

12 Hours before Landfall    
Inland High Wind Warning
for hurricane force winds
Issued for inland counties that sustained wind of 74 mph or greater associated with a hurricane are anticipated beyond the coastal areas in the next six to twelve hours. Issued by:

Other Useful Products    
Latest Day 2
Convective Outlook
Issued twice a day to outline the areas where severe thunderstorms may develop and qualifies the degree of risk (i.e. SLGT, MDT, and HIGH risk areas). Issued by:
SPC
24 Hour QPF
DAY 2
Issued daily with one update in the afternoon.   QPFs predict the amount of precipitation over the 24 hour forecast time period. Issued by:
HPC
Latest Day 1
Convective Outlook
Issued 5 times daily to outline the areas where severe thunderstorms may develop and qualifies the degree of risk (i.e. SLGT, MDT, and HIGH risk areas). Issued by:

24 Hour QPF
DAY 1

Tornado Watch Issued to alert the public that conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes in and close to the watch area.  These watches are issued with information concerning the watch area and the length of time they are in effect. Issued by:

Tornado Warning Issued by local NWS offices to warn the public that a tornado has been sighted by storm spotters or has been indicated by radar.   These warnings are issued with information concerning where the tornado is presently located and what communities are in the anticipated path of the tornado. Issued by:

Short Term Forecast Issued as a 1-2 hour forecast of local weather conditions; emphasizing hazardous weather. Issued by:
