NSDI CAP Program

The National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) Cooperative Agreements Program (CAP) is an annual program to assist the geospatial data community through funding and other resources in implementing the components of the NSDI. This program provides small seed grants to initiate sustainable on-going NSDI implementations. The program emphasizes partnerships, collaboration and the leveraging of geospatial resources in achieving its goals.

A consortium of Florida state, local, and federal GIS managers applied for and received a Fifty-States Initiative grant for strategic planning for statewide GIS coordination. A page for the project is also maintained by the Federal Geographic Data Committee.

Final Strategic Plan Now Available

The final draft of the strategic plan is now available.

This strategic plan presents the vision and overarching goals that will successfully improve statewide coordination and sharing of geographic information for the benefit of all stakeholders in the State of Florida.  This plan is the product of a process overseen by a 21-member steering committee that included representatives from all levels of government, academia and the private sector, from various regions of the state.  The Committee used several methods to engage as many stakeholders as possible in the planning process.  The stakeholder community provided the details needed to understand the current status of geographic data sharing and coordination, as well as the availability and usage of GIS within the state. They also offered specific suggestions to improve the availability of current and accurate GIS data vital to decision makers, program managers, and the GIS user community.  Their valuable input helped the Committee determine what is required to successfully improve statewide GIS data coordination throughout Florida.

The committee continues as a volunteer group of GIS professionals striving to coordinate and support outreach activites which directly benefit the state GIS community.

Florida Legislature Calls for Examination of State Agency Geographic Information Systems

Florida's Office of Program Policy Analysis & Government Accountability (OPPAGA), an office of the Florida Legislature, has been requested by the Legislature to examine state agency geographic information systems.

OPPAGA's 2007-2008 Business Plan states, "At the request of the Legislature, OPPAGA will examine whether there is duplication and overlap in agency efforts to develop geographic information systems."
